A list of healthy snacks for children and adults, from Sydney dietitian Lynda Hamilton at Hamilton Dietetics.

This list of healthy snacks appeared in our March newsletter as part of an article questioning whether the word ‘healthy’ is becoming a marketing buzz word.  You can read that article here – Is healthy becoming a marketing buzz word? – and sign up for the next bi-monthly newsletter at the very bottom of this page.

Healthy snacks for children and adults

  • Cheese and wholegrain crackers
  • Humus and veg sticks
  • Any bean based dip, veg sticks or crackers
  • Single portion sized tin of tuna with crackers or pitta and cucumber sticks
  • Falafel or mini bean burgers – with a yoghurt dip or in a pitta pocket with salad
  • Celery sticks with peanut butter spread down the centre
  • Any nut butters make great dips for raw veg or spread on a few crackers. Check health food shops for a greater selection if you can’t find them elsewhere.
  • A one slice snack-wich (preferably brown bread) with whatever your child enjoys – Vegemite, jam, cheese, humus, tuna fish, peanut butter
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Yoghurt with or without fresh fruit, or with nuts and a drizzle of honey.  A sliced banana with a spoonful of yoghurt topped with unsalted nuts is a great mid-morning boost.
  • Small packet of pop corn
  • 4 squares of dark chocolate containing 70% cocoa solids– tear a strip off for kids, and wrap it in foil so it looks the same as other chocolate. 70% might be too bitter for young ones, but the idea is it contains a higher quantity of cocoa solids, and less sugar.
