Downloadable fact sheets on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) from Sydney dietitian, Lynda Hamilton.

IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is a condition that has no specific known cause, and can only be diagnosed by evaluating an individual’s symptoms. Unlike Coeliac disease or lactose intolerance, there is no specific test that can be carried out to show someone has it.

Symptoms of IBS include bloating, wind, abdominal pain when going to the toilet, and alternating between diarrhoea and constipation.

Unfortunately there is no blanket solution for IBS or one cure fits all. Each person needs to be assessed on an individual basis to decide upon the the appropriate dietary changes. A qualified dietitian and nutritionist will be able to advise on the most appropriate changes each individual should make to their diet to improve their overall health and nutrition, and beat the uncomfortable symptoms of IBS.

Due to this, these downloadable fact sheets should be used as a general guide, and if you do think you have IBS book an appointment with a dietitian who will be able to help you.
