Type 2 diabetes is becoming more and more prevalent because of our unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 9 out of 10 cases of diabetes and it is often known as late onset diabetes because the older you are, the higher your risk. That said, people of African-Caribbean and South Asian origin are more prone to type 2 diabetes and may even suffer with it in their 20s and 30s.
Type 2 diabetes is caused when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to control blood glucose levels, or when the body’s cells do not react as they should to the insulin produced – resulting in high blood sugar levels.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes are slightly different from type 1. The problem with type 2 is that the signs maybe mild for a while, gradually becoming worse over time – which means it often slips under the radar and is left undiagnosed and unmanaged. By the time it is diagnosed, it may have caused various health problems including permanent nerve damage in the feet and hands which makes it painful to walk; damage to the retina in the eye which can lead to blindness if untreated, and an increased risk of stroke and kidney disease.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important that you visit your doctor. They will be able to perform a simple test to see how much glucose is coursing around your body, either by testing your urine or taking a blood test. They can then refer you to a dietitian and nutritionist who can help you make changes to your diet and lifestyle so that the type 2 diabetes is managed and does not lead to more serious health problems.
